Queanbeyan - Captains Flat - Bungendore - Queanbeyan Loop Half day tour (approx. – 125 kms, return)
WHERE? Captains Flat, NSW.
HOW DO I GET THERE? From Queanbeyan travel east along the Bungendore Road for 4 kms, take right turn to Captains Flat, 45km. This road passes through some picturesque country that features several notable properties such as Carwoola Station, a large two storey homestead built by Thomas Rutledge in 1849 and Foxlow Station, one of Australia's top Poll Hereford studs. St. Thomas's Church circa 1872 is also on this road.
This delightful, historic village features the Captains Flat Market on the first Saturday of every month. This event is well worth the visit and provides country delights within minutes of the city.
![]() But if markets aren't your thing, pack a picnic hamper, visit the Outsider Cafe for a freshly brewed coffee or traipse through one of the towns many galleries. Captains Flat also features an array of historic buildings and old mining sites (see image above). Pick up the Captains Flat “Pathway to Gold” brochure which details the heritage trail through the village and learn about the days when Captains Flat was one of Australia’s most productive and populated mining areas.
Continue this half day drive towards Bungendore via Hoskinstown. From Hoskinstown take Bushy Road (on the slopes of the Great Divide) towards Bungendore, then back along the Kings Hwy to Queanbeyan. For an extended version of this drive, continue reading...
Queanbeyan - Captains Flat - Bungendore - Lowden Park - Big Hole - Braidwood Queanbeyan Loop - (Day trip)
WHERE? This adventurous drive can easily be tacked onto the end of the drive outlined above. This drive requires at least an entire day to complete if not two. A great way to tackle it would be to add a night in Braidwood to the mix. In this manner it's a drive which can be done at a leisurely pace.
HOW DO I GET THERE? Follow the directions above until you reach Captains Flat. After your adventures in this town, leave Captain’s Flat along the Braidwood Road for 4kms and turn left onto Harolds Cross Road. Follow the Forestry Commissions blue and white markers which lead to Lowden Forest Park (19kms).
This site is an old logging camp. It features an historic Water Wheel which once drove a generator for the workers in the area. It's now equipped with camping areas, wood bbq's, toilets and drinking water.
![]() Depart Lowden Forest and return to the same route on the Braidwood Road, turn left and continue for 21 kms until you reach a T-Intersection. Take a right turn onto Krawaree Road and follow for around 18kms. A sign on the right hand side of the road indicates Deua National Forest and Big Hole walking trail. Turn left and follow the road to the carpark and basic camping area. Here you'll find a map of the area. Follow the walking trail towards the Shoalhaven River.
Cross the river and follow the walking track for approximately 1.5 kms. This is a moderate walk, with a moderate climb. Once you leave Deua National Park return to Braidwood on a mainly sealed road.
Picnic and camping facilities are available at the Captains Flat Reserve. Information is available at the service station. |
